The Roots.
Pre-history
Middle Palaeolithic

During the course of the Middle Palaeolithic period (100000-35000 BC), the use of fire spread widely. Tools also became more sophisticated: spearheads, knives, scrapers and serrated blades were made of various kinds of stone. Homo neanderthalensis had to adapt to a much colder climate during the last period of glaciation. They lived in caves and shelters and also in open-air camps. They gathered wild plants and fruit and hunted horses, wild cattle, goats and deer. The various remains found include a jawbone at Banyoles and the mark of a wooden stick or spear at Romaní de Capellades.
