Rebirth, Patriotism and Nationalism
Associations and Popular Culture

During the second half of the 19th century, the number of associations rose, with new organisations emerging reflecting the circumstances of contemporary society. In 1887, there were 106 Clavé choral societies with 40,000 members. Interest in scientific excursions resulted in the founding of the Catalan Excursion Centre in 1890. Workers' associations promoted training for the working class. New sports, such as football, co-existed alongside other increasingly popular activities such as gymnastics and cycling, as well as sports enjoyed by the upper classes, such as riding.
